Three Quirky (But Relevant) Things to Consider When Choosing a College

By May 29, 2019 No Comments

Choosing a college is one of those monumental life decisions that will determine your future in a variety of ways. Need additional pointers to decide on which college is right for you?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to the above, then it’s safe to assume that you have considered the main, orthodox points such as:

  • Accreditation
  • Types of Majors & Degrees Available
  • Location
  • Cost / Financial Aid Opportunities
  • Admission Criteria / Rate

There’s more to ponder of course. But if you want to think different (ditto Steve Jobs), then there are three, uncommon factors to consider when choosing a college.

1. Will my secondary school friends be there?

You’re supposed to make new friends in college. However, you can’t live without your high school BFF, so you both go to the same school! If you need someone to get lunch with or study with, you know your best friend is always down if they’re free too. It’s never a question if you two are both sitting around doing nothing that you could go to one another’s room and do nothing together.

2. What can I do after class is over for the day?

Of course, there is more to the student life than classes, assignments and exams! Look out for the student organisations in a college of your interest; from sports clubs to cultural societies to community-centric clubs, there should be plenty of options for you to pursue your passion. There’s also the various events and activities at your college town, such as sporting events and concerts.

3. Are there any twinning programmes so I can study overseas?

Nothing beats learning another culture first-hand; from new foods, customs and traditions (plus an odd slang or two), So if you have the chance to study aboard, take it! Have a look at the twinning programmes available when picking a college.
